Driving is a dangerous activity, but it is often mandatory to get to work, run errands and go about your daily life. Avoiding accidents can be a challenge even for the safest of drivers. It may seem as though the emergence of smart phones and other technologies has only made drivers even more reckless. There are some actions on the road that are particularly negligent and drivers should avoid them at all costs.
The following are three examples of such. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as many as 4,000 Florida drivers are in fatal accidents in a given year, so it is more important than ever to avoid these driving dangers.
1. Texting while driving
Texting while driving is one of the most treacherous yet most common mistakes a driver can make. No matter how adept at multitasking you may be, looking away for a single moment — let alone the several required to read or type a text — can be the difference between life and death when you are on the road. Keep your phone out of sight and out of mind.
2. Disobeying traffic laws
You are likely guilty of going at least a few miles over the speed limit when you were in a hurry. This may not seem like a big deal, but any kind of traffic violation is a form of negligence that can easily have dire consequences. Getting somewhere a few minutes sooner is never worth the risk of injury that traffic violations carry.
3. Engaging with distractions
Phones are not the only distraction you may be vulnerable to when you are on the road. Reaching to change the radio station takes your hands off the wheel, and pausing to look at a billboard will take your eyes off the road for too long. It is imperative that you be aware of the various distractions that exist so you can actively combat them and maintain focus on driving.
